WHAT WOULD OUR NAZARETH BE LIKE IF MOTHER FOUNDRESS WERE FOUNDING IT TODAY?

IN THE SPIRIT OF THE SYNOD

The Chapter is a time of listening. The NEW THING can be born out of the attentiveness of the Spirit and by following the Synodal Pathways.

THE THREE SYNODAL VIRTUES ACCORDING TO POPE FRANCIS

  1. THINKING AS GOD THINKS

The Greek word “synodos” means a common way. Synodality is part of the essence of the Church and begins as early as the first century, with the so-called Council of Jerusalem described in the 15th chapter of Acts as a good example. Synodality, or “walking together,” can be seen above all in the faithful who belong to the Church, when together, that is, as a true community, they walk through life toward heaven, invited by the Risen Jesus, serving one another with the gifts they have been given to serve.

  1. OPENNESS

“A true apostle should be open-minded and ready to interact with anyone, regardless of background or views.”

At the chapter we experience this aspect by talking in culturally and linguistically diverse groups. Openness is an expression of accepting each other as we are. Openness enables us to have an in-depth dialogue on matters of the congregation, but also on issues of daily life.

  1. HUMILITY

“Humility allows us to appreciate others, changing our perspective from ‘I’ to ‘we,’ which is so necessary in community.”

The goal of the synodal journey is communion, participation and mission. During the chapter, we are building an international community, every sister is included in the listening and discernment processes, every sister’s opinion is important. Dialogue prepares mission, just as discernment prepares good decisions. We have the opportunity to practice elements of the synodal path, remembering that it requires spiritual conversion, Pope Francis teaches.

DID YOU KNOW?

20 sisters are in the chapter for the first time. In the near future, two sisters in our congregation will make their first vows in the US.
