LIVING THE LEGACY

A Spiritual Renewal Rooted in Franciszka Siedliska’s Charism

This year, another cherished edition of the Root Program brought together the Sisters of the Holy Family of Nazareth for a month-long spiritual renewal at the Generalate in Rome. Nine Sisters from the United States, Ghana, and Poland participated in this special program to deepen our mission and connection with our Foundress, Blessed Mary of Jesus the Good Shepherd, Franciszka Siedliska, through prayer, reflection, and pilgrimage.

Reconnecting with Foundational Roots

The Root Program’s design centered on fostering a profound, personal connection with Blessed Mary of Jesus the Good Shepherd. Each Sister spent dedicated time in reflection, privately reading letters, chronicles, and personal writings of our Foundress. These quiet moments, paired with the experience of Machiavelli, allowed us to find fresh inspiration in the words and mission of Mother Frances.

The program also included a rich series of conferences and workshops providing space for collective growth and reflection. Guided sessions illuminated how to bring the charism of the Holy Family into modern times, encouraging us to share our insights, explore new spiritual avenues, and offer support to one another.

Pilgrimages to Sacred Sites

An essential part of the program was a pilgrimage to Italy’s sacred sites, walking in the footsteps of saints and martyrs. Our visit to Loretto, deeply meaningful to our Foundress, Blessed Frances Siedliska, renewed our connection to the Holy Family at the Holy House. We also visited the Sanctuary of the Holy Face in Manoppello, the Grotto of Saint Michael the Archangel, San Giovanni Rotondo, and the Eucharistic Miracle site in Lanciano. Each site offered a unique encounter with the sacred, inspiring devotion and gratitude for saints who dedicated their lives to Christ. Everywhere we traveled, we felt the beautiful spirit of the Nazareth community, strengthening our bond and purpose.

Anticipating the Final Days of Retreat

As the program draws to a close, we are entering into the final three-day retreat, a time for quiet reflection and integration of their journey. This retreat offers an opportunity to distill the experiences of the past month, to reflect on the insights gained, and to carry the fruits of this spiritual renewal back into our respective ministries around the world.

Life in Rome: From Coffee Culture to the Chaotic Charm of Roman Transportation

Appreciating Rome’s rich coffee culture and navigating its unpredictable bus schedules added a delightful touch of adventure and humor to our time in the city.

Beyond these delights, we were captivated by the city’s richness in art and history, from the grandeur of its basilicas to the quiet beauty of its frescoes. Each corner seemed alive with stories, echoing the devotion of saints and artists who have shaped this vibrant heart of Catholic faith.

A Grateful Heart

We want to express our deep gratitude for this precious time. Rome and our communities here have truly been a blessing, offering a sacred space to renew, reconnect, and root ourselves firmly in the Catholic faith and in the legacy of our Foundress. As we prepare to conclude this journey, we carry forward the lessons we’ve learned, refreshed and ready to serve with renewed dedication and joy.
